The Simplicity Test for Advisors
There is a prevailing belief in the financial industry that 'complex problems require complex solutions.' This is a lie used to justify high fees and keep clients in a state of perpetual dependence. When an advisor uses layers of jargon and 'sophisticated' strategies, they are often signaling one of two things: incompetence or a hidden agenda.
At SafeSimpleSound, we believe that true expertise is the ability to make the complex simple.
We encourage all our clients to use 'The Simplicity Test' when vetting any professional. The test is easy:
- State your Principle clearly (e.g., 'My principle is to replace my income in 10 years with zero active management.').
- Ask the Advisor: 'Given that principle, what do you recommend and why—in one sentence?'
If the advisor responds with a 40-minute lecture on market cycles, alpha generation, and proprietary algorithms, they have failed the test. They are adding noise, not value.
A 'Sound' advisor will give you a direct, actionable answer that aligns with your 'Simple' goal. They understand that their job isn't to be the smartest person in the room; it's to be the most effective guide for your life.
Don't be intimidated by vocabulary. In the S3 Framework, clarity is the ultimate metric of competence. If they can't make it simple for you, they haven't made it safe for you. It’s time to demand better—or find someone who actually understands the principle of 'Sound' advice.
